Posing 3D Characters
Practising posing of your 3D rigs is the starting point prior to animating a character in a shot. Our goal is to have strong poses that read well in silhouette- "story telling poses". Let's reference back to my discussion over the magician in Presto. The short animation from Pixar is worth watching over and over, there are so many golden nuggets packed in the short, each time I watch it, I pick up new insights- the gift that keep on giving...:)
Simplified Posing Notes:
To clarify what a character is doing or feeling.
A good Pose will follow a line of action.
A good Pose will read well in Silhouette
A good Pose also incorporates Weight and Balance

Our goal is to create 6 Poses. Starting from the actual neutral pose that the rig comes in, transforming the Contrapposto pose from my Eleven Rig demo.
The order: Neutral Pose, Hold for 8 Frames, Contrapposto Pose-Hold for 8 Frames, then Back to Neutral Pose, then Excitement Pose- Hold for 8 Frames, Back to Neutral Pose, Angry Pose- Hold for 8 Frames, Back to Neutral Pose, Scared Pose- Hold for 8 Frames, Back to Neutral Pose, then the last pose is YOUR CHOICE (with my approval).
Export Your Playblast with lighting, include frame numbers, title cards with stills for each shot and silhouette at the side.
Animation Mentor (Online Animation School set the gold standard for this activity many, many years ago; everyone who teaches animation has at some point incorporated this exercise accordingly. Please search online the numerous and fantastic examples available, normally you would take reference pictures of yourself acting out the mood, sketch it out, then you simply push your poses to incorporate the suggested Character Emotion using our 3D Rig.

Follow the "Line-of-Action" for each pose, consider if the character shows a Balanced Pose, is the weight(COG-Centre of Gravity) transferred to support the Balance, and how well does the overall Silhouette work for that pose- Any room for further improvement?.
