Prototype Design of an Electric Vehicle that Delivers Groceries Door to Door Challenge/ Task: What better project that represents our present condition of Self Isolation in this unprecedented times than working on a conceptual project that would address a need that is so much lacking, a door to door grocery delivery system that would ultimately benefit our society in a time of great need.
I am hoping through this project we will all engage our minds to investigate and explore systems that might benefit our society, simply an exploratory experience that challenges our minds to think creatively, to come up with solutions, and most importantly contributing to possible future innovations.
" Let us all attempt to be part of the solution, take risks, experiment with ideas and come up with concepts; embark onto a journey of discovery and learning- how cool is that!" Mr. A. Balian
NOTE: I have eliminated as much as possible the need to use the same technology that was available to us within our classroom experience. Specific use of technical software and hardware will not be necessary to incorporate while working on project-based design activities. I have incorporated an emphasis for research, reflection, and analysis in each stage prior to going forward with any design development. We will communicate our ideas and concepts through the use of every day tools such as pencils, crayons, and or markers. Furthermore, as far as model making our prototype concepts, lets build with our hands, possibly by incorporating card stock, Plasticine, Lego bricks, and or completely OPTIONALapplications, such as digital drawing tool and a 3D modelling application that are available for FREE to all students (Autodesk Sketchbook and Autodesk Maya) .
Stage 01 Research 8 Visuals and or points of interest Stage 02 Analysis of Research Develop Mind map Suggestion: 8 Researched Items to analyze Stage 03 Concept Development of EV "4 -2 -1" Approach, 4 concepts, evolved to 2 concepts and then further evolved to 1 prototype design of a vehicle. Stage 04 Robot Design Development Similar approach to above, 8 reference points, "4 -2 - 1" approach to develop your robot prototype design Stage 05 Develop Identity Package Stage 06 Document the Final Package Hoping you will all be proud of your learning and accomplishments, by reflecting on the journey and seeing what products you created through the Exploring Technology course at Castlebrooke Secondary School.
DELIVERABLES and SUCCESS CRITERIA Every week we will have a checkpoint of our deliverables including receiving descriptive feedback for next steps, order to progress our project through stages outlined above.
STAGE 01 and 02 Research & Analysis Research, Analysis and Mind Map Exploration The activity for the first two weeks, sets up the groundwork to build our project on, going over the importance of researching, analyzing and "bringing-in" references and influences prior to designing our prototype vehicle that delivers groceries door to door.
Questions to be addressed. Goal: research, analyze and explore possible avenues that this project can go to, include your findings on your mind Maps in the form of Words and Doodles (thumbnail sketches) just like my lesson posted on my YouTube channel, link can be found below.
1- Delivery of Groceries either, Autonomous driving system or Human based, decide which system you would like to investigate. 2-Showcase some of the existing grocery delivery systems that might already be in place within urban cities? 3-Research and showcase what vehicle types exist in this present time that possibly delivers food, groceries or mail door to door. 4-Explore what the delivered product is contained-in, does your order come in a bag at your door, does it come in a box, what other methods, showcase your findings visually (with words and sketches). 5-How are orders of groceries stored in such vehicles, stacked, lying around back of a van, what organizational options have you discovered. Additionally, is there a need for the vehicle to be refrigerated while being transported, document your findings. 6-Are there any prototypes being worked on presently that drive in autonomous mode or with a person, for the purposes of delivering goods, document your findings accordingly.
Please feel free to go off on your own, beyond the six questions noted above, and add whatever else you think might support your investigation.
Deliverables: Create a Mind Map on paper or digitally that addresses the above six questions. Please keep in mind that your Mind Map document will evolve further on a weekly bases, we will be adding additional supporting information to evolve our design thinking and process.
Success Criteria: Submit your findings for feedback(there are no wright or wrong submissions, this is simply a journey of exploration and discovery). Please take a picture of your WIP (Work In Progress) on paper and or digitally and submit it on D2L within Week 1 Submission folder. We will be incorporating additional branches of discovery as we progress through this project, please leave room accordingly-good stuff!
My lesson on creating a mind map, please watch prior to placing your notes/sketches in an organic format.
STAGE 03Concept Development Module introduction posted in the form of a recorded video lesson Part 01 The lesson sets up the ground work to start our project, going over the importance of researching, analyzing and bringing-in influences prior to designing our conceptual vehicle that delivers groceries door to door.
Question to address during this stage of our work What would the design of an Electric Vehicle look like that delivers groceries?
All of my Students have the ability to EXPLORE, find images, references, analyze what you are seeing (schematically sketch what you are seeing)and potentially create a theory/ direction as to what your vehicle will be doing?
Analyze by thumbnail sketching what you are referencing. The recorded two video lessons for this week suggest the step necessary to get this project started; Video Part 02 will go through the process in greater detail.
Additionally, you will be introduced to the concept of Form Follows Function and Function Follows Form, that will be incorporated throughout this project particularly during your design development stage.
Vehicle Design References Showcase 8 examples that inspire you and suggest why you chose each example accordingly.
Suggestions of what you can say below. "I chose this image because the design seems compact and easy to navigate through the streets" " I chose this image because the design suggests a flexible storage system that I could possibly incorporate in my E.V. design." " The following referenced image suggests that the E.V. can store multiple grocery orders at one time."
Drawing Activity: Creating Orthographic Projections of Objects Drawing Objects in Orthographic Views is a form of conveying analysis and design ideas, it is a fundamental skill set or a language of communication that most designers, architects and engineers use in their own professional practice- never too early to learn such a skill set.
Demonstration of Skills Acquired This week you will begin to demonstrate your new learning skill set by drawing an electric sharpener in 5 orthographic views.
Please submit your work in the D2L platform for feedback and direction to next steps.
NOTE: Not everyone will quickly learn the technical skill set to draw objects in orthographic views, nor is it necessary, initially we need to sketch what we are looking at in orthographic views, once the information has been synthesized in multiple views than we may incorporate the proper technical projection methods for drawing objects in Orthographic views.
The two lessons below showcase the importance of observing and analyzing what we see prior to jumping into drawing an object using a technical skill set to communicate what we see.
STAGE 04 Robot Concept Design Development Research: What type of Robotic Delivery systems exist in the world today that presently delivers groceries and or parcels? There are THREE lessons below to unpack the learning as well as give students choices in the direction to go forward.
Note: The research questions from above are further explored below through the first video, starting at the timeline 9:15.
Direction Option 02 We will be exploring a more stylized design of Robots that potentially can pick up boxes, walk and deliver, please review the two lessons below, showcasing how through the use of simple shapes, we can develop ideas, concepts and eventually build form. This will be a 1 to 2 week exploration, allocated time to design a prototype of a Stylized Robot.
STAGE 05 Develop Identity Package Logo Name, Design & Slogan As discussed during our weekly live meetings, we will end the year by exploring what the value of branding, logo design and slogans mean to companies and corporations, giving us the stepping stone to create such items within our own projects. Additional lessons to unpack the learning will be provided within a week, as we get closer in our timeline.
STAGE 06Putting the Package Together We simply demonstrate the various stages of our project within one document; more information will follow as we get closer to the end of Term.
